Who can vote

To vote as a resident of the District of North Vancouver you must be:

  • 18 years or older on general voting day
  • A Canadian citizen
  • A resident of British Columbia for at least six months immediately before you register
  • Living in the District of North Vancouver on the day you register
  • Not disqualified from voting under any law

Moved here recently? There is no minimum time in the District. If you live here when you register and have lived in B.C. for six months, you can vote.

Non-resident property electors. If you own property in the District but live elsewhere in B.C., you may be able to vote here as a non-resident property elector. You must have owned the property for at least 30 days before you register, and only one owner can vote for a property: if there are other owners, a majority of them must consent in writing. Confirm with the District.

What to bring

If you are already on the voters list, you do not need identification to vote.

If you are not registered, have moved or have changed your name, you register at the voting place, and you need two pieces of identification that together show who you are and where you live. At least one must carry your signature. If none of it shows your address, you can make a solemn declaration of where you live.

Not sure you are on the list? Take two pieces with you. The District accepts:

  • BC driver's licence, BC Identification Card or BC Services Card
  • ICBC vehicle insurance document or BC CareCard
  • Social Insurance Number card or Canadian citizenship card
  • Property tax notice
  • Credit or debit card
  • A utility bill for electricity, natural gas, water, telephone or cable
  • Indian Status Card, a First Nation citizenship or membership card, or a Métis Nation British Columbia citizenship card
  • Ministry of Social Development and Economic Security form SDES8

The District's list, from its information for voters, checked September 18, 2026. A non-resident property elector also brings proof of owning the property, such as a title search, and any co-owners' consent form, which comes from elections@dnv.org.

Registering

You may already be registered. The District uses the provincial voters list, so if you are registered to vote provincially at your District address, you are on the District's list.

If you are not, register when you vote. Advance registration closed on August 18, 2026. Anyone not on the list registers at the voting place, on an advance voting day or on October 17, with the identification described above, and votes in the same visit.

Voting by mail

Any eligible District voter can vote by mail. Ask the District's Chief Election Officer for a mail ballot package before September 23, 2026 to have it mailed to you: by email to elections@dnv.org, in person at District Hall, or by post to Chief Election Officer, 355 West Queens Road, North Vancouver, BC V7N 4N5.

After that there may not be time to mail it both ways, so the District suggests picking your package up at District Hall. No mail ballots are issued after October 2, 2026.

Your completed ballot must reach the Chief Election Officer by 8 p.m. on October 17, 2026, by mail or through the mail slot at District Hall's front door. The other voting places cannot take it.

Help at the voting place

  • Every voting place has a priority line for anyone who finds standing or waiting in line hard, including older adults, pregnant people and people with young children. No explanation or proof is needed.
  • Curbside voting, on every voting day at every voting place: call District Hall at 604-990-2311 to arrange it, or ask when you arrive, and an election official brings the ballot to you.
  • Someone you bring, or an election official, can help you mark your ballot. The person helping signs a declaration first.
  • Signature guides, magnifiers and large-grip pen aids are at every voting place. Service animals are welcome.

Make a voting plan

People who decide in advance when they are going are far more likely to actually vote. Take thirty seconds:

  1. Pick your day. Advance voting or Saturday, October 17.
  2. Pick your time. Voting places are open 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on general voting day.
  3. Pick your place. Enter your postal code to find the nearest before you leave.
  4. Not sure you are registered? Put two pieces of identification by the door, one with your signature.
  5. Bring somebody. A neighbour, your partner, your adult kids.
